| Painting with Light
“I don’t paint people and things; I paint the way light reacts to people and things. This brings me to the basics about light and dark.” (Harley Brown)
Watch the transitions in this video. So simple if you think about it. It is a common and basic technique to wipe into and out of a scene with camera movement or a wipe over the lens, but how often do you see a change of lighting state in a scene. When the cloud cover comes over the DoP wants to go again. We are are so into the illusion of continuity. When you see that rule broken it can be used really beautifully, like here in James Blakes’ A Case of You.
Obviously there is a lot of prep, budget and timing involved in James Blake’s vid, but the theory of using light to transition a scene is a simple one that can be done effectively and cheaply.
Check out some of Stuart Graham, DoP’s other work. Darkness is his canvas, which he shapes with a tool called light.
Just been to see these guys in the Caribbean on the island of Trinidad. They have a great setup and service the whole of the Caribbean. Nice to meet you guys!
Expect the unexpected. You will never guess what this ad is about….if you stick around long enough to find out it’s quite funny.
It seems that edible logos are in! All you amazingly talented graphic design buddies stand aside…we’ve gone analogue. My latest promo, with its ornamental bread logo “Warm from the oven” has gone down a storm in NYC to promote the Vimeo Festival and Awards ceremony, which takes place on 8th and 9th October at their posh IAC / Vimeo HQ building in New York.
It was simply made, in a day with a two man crew (me being one man) and one artist (thanks Gran) on a Canon Mark II (lush without too much movement) and a shift and tilt lens (who said they were passe?) and was so popular it won the Vimeo Weekend Project award, the Staff Picks, was featured on the Vimeo homepage (this doesn’t sound like a big deal but this video alone was played 17.1 thousand times, with 445 thousand loads so…..it is!) and I have been invited to the festival in NYC….well, it would be rude not to! So OUT with the hedonistic weekend in Amsterdam for my 30th (probably best avoided as I am showing all the signs of a mid-life crisis….my plan is to live fast, die young so my mid-life is a decade before others) and IN with a long haul for a “Double Ristretto Venti Nonfat Organic Chocolate Brownie Frappuccino Extra Hot with Foam and Whipped Cream Upside Down Double Blended please (…”to go” so that I can watch the screenings and gurus). I’ll pass on any gems of knowledge in the next bulletin. Excuse the blatent attempt to keep you interested.
So the moral of the story is if you’ve got an idea - J.F.D.I (google it)!
If you don’t use Vimeo to host your videos, check it out. If it’s good enough for Obama, it’s good enough for me.

See things….differently.
Lots of wonderful things happen around us all the time; being able to see is easy, but being able to capture that very moment is probably the hardest part. A good photo comprise of many things, not only you must hit the shutter at the right time and moment, the perspective, composition and color coordination plays a big role too.
